Tongue scraping is part of the Ayurvedic morning routine and helps to remove toxic substances accumulated overnight from the tongue. Since the mouth is already part of the digestive system, it is also supported by daily cleaning. Cleaning the tongue helps with bad breath and over time enhances all taste sensations.

Traditionally, a so-called tongue scraper made of stainless steel, copper, silver or even gold is used.

In this article, you will find out all the benefits of tongue scraping.

Detoxification through tongue

Did you know that at night your body is busy with detoxification and cleansing?

Partly this happens through the tongue. That is why you should clean your tongue with the tongue scraper starting tomorrow.

For many years I’ve been using a stainless steel tongue scraper. It will last a lifetime if you treat it well and use it daily and not just as an emergency tool.

Health benefits of tongue scraping

Fresh and pure

With the tongue scraper, you can easily and effortlessly remove lots of ama, bacteria and toxins.

Ama is the Ayurvedic term for all metabolic residues that accumulate in the body due to unfavourable nutrition and environmental influences. Too much ama leads to diseases. And who wants them?

No more bad breath

Cleaning the tongue puts an end to bad breath, enhances the perception of taste and tones the tongue. Tongue cleaning is an important contribution to the protection against caries and periodontitis.

Dirty tongue

By cleaning the tongue you clean the whole oral cavity and you have a totally clean and fresh feeling in your mouth. It feels really delicious.

How to use it?

  • After getting up in the morning, rinse out your mouth briefly with warm water to moisten the oral cavity, which is often dry in the morning.
  • Hold your tongue scraper at the open ends and scrape off the coating 3-4 times from back to front under slight pressure.
  • Wash the device with hot water after each scraping.

More frequent or pressure-intensive scraping does not help and rather disturbs the natural microflora of the tongue.

Tongue scraping instructions

No plastic

Do not use plastic scrapers – the mucous membrane of the mouth is very receptive and so harmful plastics can stress the body. The toothbrush is also unsuitable for cleaning the tongue, as it is perfect for bacteria and is difficult to clean.

Let it become routine

My tongue scraper now lives next to my toothbrush. It has become such a habit that I never forget it. It only takes a few seconds and you do yourself so much good.

The cleaning of the tongue works like a massage of the internal organs and it supports your intestine in its work. In Ayurveda, the tongue is considered part of the margin/intestinal tract, so it makes sense to support the intestine a little bit in its big task of keeping us healthy.

Believe me, when you see for the first time what is on your tongue in the morning and what you have swallowed every morning, you will never want to do without it again.
